Video of a typical Wheeled Rucksack

Points to look for when buying a rucksack with wheels.

Size Matters

Yes size matters, too big and it’s not hand luggage, too small and you can’t fit enough into it. I know it’s obvious but with airlines ever changing strict criteria on bag size it does matter.

Shape or style?

The shape also affects the amount of storage space you have. The more rounded or stylish the bag is the less internal space you have for a set size.

Does the backpack have external pockets? Very handy for getting to items quickly, but fill the pockets and they increase the size of your bag, and you may not get through the hand luggage criteria.

You have to pay for Quality

I’m afraid that quality costs. To make your wheeled backpack light, strong and durable the best materials should be used.

The best fabric used in the manufacture of wheeled rucksacks is ballistic nylon and cordura nylon, with a dernier of 1000 to 1050. Dernier is a measurement of the nylons weight, less normally indicates a lower quality material.

If a backpack is going to fail it is usually the zipper. There are 2 types of zipper:

  • Chain zipper
  • Coil zipper

A chain zipper is made from injection molded resins fused directly onto the zipper tape making them incredibly strong and robust also more resistant to dirt & sand.

Coil zippers are more flexible, less expensive and easier to install.

Padding

You will have to carry your rucksack and when full it will be quite heavy so padded shoulder straps and handles are a must.

Does the rucksack have internal padding to protect fragile content?

Rucksack Wheels

There are 2 types of wheeled rucksacks, 2 wheeled and 4 wheeled. Four wheels make the bag more stable and easier to roll than two. Make sure that the wheels are recessed into the bag for protection, as a proud wheel can easily get sheared off on any proud projection.

Weight

The weight of your rucksack with wheels is also a main factor to consider when purchasing, you will at some point have to carry it and if it’s too heavy when empty it will be extremely uncomfortable when full.

But where to buy them from and how much are they?

My research on the web took a lot longer than expected, so I decided to make a blog to help you and save you time.

I hope this helps you.
